REMARKABLE ESCAPE
PROM SERIOUS INJURY.
BUS BOLLS DOWN BANK.
AUCKLAND, Sunday. A remarkable escape from serious injury was experienced by more than twenty people when a motor bus in which they were riding left the road and capsized down a bank near Maixangi Bay on Saturday afternoon. The occupants were imprisoned inj- side the bus, standing or lying on piles ■K of broken glass and with imminent danof some 20 gallons of petrol burstinto flames until a back window was smashed and they were assisted out one by one. Ji|-iily one passenger was seriously ]iM; Mrs Alice Evelyn Jones, aged 30. S’ne had an artery in her left, wrist severed and was taken to hospital. Among the other occupants who received medical attention were Miss M. Ogilvie, who suffered concussion, her younger sister, who had cuts on the hands and one shoulder; Miss Woodlock, whose injuries included severe shock and abrasions to the face, and Miss Edna Elliffe, who received extensive bruises. Several other people suffered from shock, brutees, abrasions and minor cuts. ..m, When climbing a liilWthe driver of the bus pulled over to the side to allow an overtaking motorist to pass. There is a bank of . about 8 feet deep at the side of the road and without warning the edge crumbled away under the weight of the heavy bus, which rolled over the edge and down the bank. All the occupants were thrown from their seats, landing in a tangle of broken windows. The bus was not damaged .extensively. Most of the •windows on " side were broken.—(P.A.)
