Mr W. 0. Hawke, of the staff of the Magistrate’s Court, Masterton, is at present on relieving duty at Dannevirke. A London cable states that tjPKdeatli occurred suddenly of Mr John Slater, a member of the House of Commons. He collapsed after making a speech at a dinner at Eastbourne. He had large interests in coal, cotton and iron and was reputed to be a millionaire.
Sir William Perry, of Masterton, was re-elected chairman of Massey College Council at last Friday’s meeting of that body at Palmerston North, with Prof. T. A. Hunter as vice-chairman. The council sympathised with Sir William Perry in his present illness and decided to send him a letter wishing him a speedy recovery. A very pleasant time was spent at Kohi Kohi on Saturday when a large number of settlers of the Whareama and Mangapakeha districts gathered to farewell Mr and Mrs Hiles-Smith, who are leaving shortly to take up their residence in Wanganui. Games, competitions and dancing were indulged in and competitions were won by Air R. Smith and Airs Horsburgh. Alusic was supplied by Alesdames James Andrew and Horsburgh an'd Alessrs CarA.en, Cripps and O’Hara. During thoj’evening Air C. S. Hay, on behalf of the settlers, Mr and Mrs Smith with a down quilt. He referred to the splendid assistance so freely given by both Air and Airs Smith in connection with the school committee, sports bodies and other district affairs. Air E. Perry, chairman of the Tinui Sports Club, also referred to the good work carried out by the departing guests and said that their place would be difficult to fill.
