CAR OVER BANK
DRIVER KILLED,
Fatal consequences attended a motor trip down the Happy Valley Road by two Brooklyn residents on Saturday afternoon, when the car went over a bank. Both occupants were seriously injured, and one, the driver, was dead on arrival at the hospital. The victims were:—• Frank Philpott, 27 Bruce Avenue, shop assistant, single, 22 years of age, severe head injuries, causing death. William James Stevenson, 42 Karepa Road, typewriter mechanic, aged 19, fracture of both thighs and shock. The car, a sedan, was travelling toward Ohiro Bay, and when it reached a slight bend in the road a few hundred yards north of the Happy Valley tea rooms, it went over a bank on the left-hand side of the road. The bank is about six feet high, and the car apparently slid sideways and rolled over, but there were no eye-witnesses of the accident. The car came to rest upsidedown, beside a low concrete wall, about eight feet from the road.The Free Ambulance was summoned and both men were taken to hospital, but Mr Philpott was beyond medical aid. ne was just learning to drive a car, and was in the employ of Messrs Ivirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd.
