MENACED BY FIRE.

WANGANUI GASWORKS. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WANGANUI, Friday. The Wanganui City Gasworks were menaced by a fire which broke out late yesterday afternoon. A spark from a railway engine ignited dry grass in the reserve in which the works stand, and the flames spread to some tar which burned fiercely, sending up a huge volume of dense black smoke. The City and Castlecliff brigades were called out and managed to keep the spreading flames from reaching the big gas holder. The damage to the property. was negligible. One fireman bad a foot badly burned by boiling tar.
