A violent explosion about 7.20 tonight startled everybody within a radius of 300 or 400 yards of the Hastings Alunicipal Buildings. The pipe that burst was a new one, and had been tested to 2000 pounds pressure and found in good condition. However, it burst, and with such violence that buildings in the vicinity were shaken, and six panes of glass were cracked in a shop on the opposite side of Ileretaunga street. Within a few minutes there was .about two feet •of water in the open drain, and one or two springs bubbling through plugs in various parts of the town. The borough water supply was completely turned off until, as a temporary measure, the water was diverted through another main.
