lEW ZEALANDERS AT HOME. MATCH AGAINST SUSSEX. iPress Association--Electrie Telegraph-Copyright. LONDON, Saturday. The New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against Sussex at Brighton to-day. Merritt, whose bowling was the chief feature of the match, was mainly responsible for the early batting failures in the Sussex team, the Christchurch bowler taking, in _ all, six wickets for just over 15 runs apiece. His record was quite good, having regard for the freeJUring of the later Sussex batsmenjlWu- Gilligan in particular being aggressive, and scoring his S'G in 80 minutes. Gilligan ’9 innings included a 6 and ten 41s. The first three wickets fell quickly, but Parks and Langridge made a stand before the' luncheon adjournment and carried the total to T 9 f° r three wickets, Parks then being 19 and his partner 16. The pair continued to . add the runs after lunch, and on their departure a useful partnership by Arthur Gilligan and Cox followed. Cox was dismissed just before the tea adjournment, when the score had mounted to 251 for seven wickets, Gilligan then having 46 to his credit. The 300 markkas passed before Gilligan was disposed of, and then Merritt lost no time m finishing off the innings. „ “With the exception of McGirr and the bowlers did not trouble the Sussex batsmen seriously.
