WELLINGTON EAST SEAT. At a meeting of the Reform League last evening, Mr T. Forsyth was selected as the Reform candidate to contest the Wellington East seat. The names of three prospective candidates, Messrs ‘T. Forsyth, Huggins and Darroch, were considered, Mr. Forsyth being chosen as stated. • „ . Last general election Mr. Forsytli contested the seat,. and was defeated by Mr. A. L. Monteith, the sitting member. On that occasion there uere four candidates.

ALLEGED’ TIMBER MONOPOLY. In his contribution to the debate on thc : Address-in-Reply in the House yesterday, Mr J. W. Munro,- Labour member for Dunedin North, enlarged on .the existence of banking, land and other monopolies. He had been informed, he said, that a timber monopoly existed in Wellington. It was a serious thing to say, but he had it on very good authority. There was, he proceeded, . a company operating in conjunction, withthe timber yards which practically fixed the price of timber in New Zealand, and yet there was the peculiar situation of sawmillers in the Dominion, who realised the danger of imported timber from Canada and Norway; and they could not keep that timber out of the country. It was the duty of the Government to step in where this ring was working, but he was not hopeful, he said, because the, people concerned wcr supporters of the. Government. AGRICULTURAL COMMISSION, j The anxiety of the people at Hawke 's Bay in regard to the report of the commission set up to advise on the establishment of an agricultural college found expression in a question yesterday by Mr Mcllvride to the. Prime Minister. 4 * Will the Prime Minister,. he asked, “give some idea of the date oil which the report of the commission would be available, as the people of Hawke’s Bay are deeply concerned about the establishment of an agricultural' college .... . Mr Nosworthy: lam waiting.for the report, and am not in a position to give the honourable member the information asked for. I can only ask him to do what I have to do, possess' himself in patience. (Laughter.)
