LOADING SAND BALLAST.

A DUNEDIN DISPUTE. STEAMER HELD UP. (By Telegraph—Press Association ) ' . DUNEDIN, Friday. Adispute in connection with the loading of sand ballast on the Commonwealth and Dominion line steamer Port Augusta arose this afternoon between .the men engaged jn the operations and the local agents. The Port Augusta arrived on Thursday morning from New York, via northern ports, to discharge 460 tons of general freight and take in about 600 tons of sand ballast before proceeding to Tort Kembla. The inward cargo was unloaded on Thursday afternoon, and a gang of waterside workers commenced to load the ballast last night; .the other three gangs commenced to-day, and work proceeded without a hitch until 3.30 p.m , when the men then intimated that they wanted an extra rate for such work. As no agreement was come to between them and the agents, operations ceased. The, matter has been referred to tlie Local Disputes Committee. In the meantime the Port Augusta is lying idle, and unless an agreement be reached in the morning the vessel will probably be detained in port over the week-end. DISPUTE SETTLED.
