THE GREEK ELECTIONS.
Yesterday a cablegram from Athens announced a debacle of the Tmoists (that is the Germanophile party), but to-day wc have a cable from London which states that M. Vcnizelos has been defeated. It is typical of the cable service which this country is compelled to put up with. Accepting the defeat ot M. Venizelos as correct, it means tha Germany has secured in Greece a similar victory to that which she obtained in the. United States, when the Germnn-Irish-American element returned a Republican. as President and a Republics* Party to the Government benches. Ot course, as is the case with the States there is practically no political or personal freedom in Greece. The politics of Greece, like those of the United States, are saturated with corruption. The political machine of Greece apparently is now controlled by the Conservative element, which is strongly pro-German. The defeat of M. Venizelos is not altogether unexpected, because the German Junkers and militarists have spent considerable sums oi monev in the Greek elections, with the avowed object, of securing tlic return of a Government which will recall exKing Constantine to the throne. They have triumphed, and the world may prepare itself for another war in the very near future.
