WHEAT QUESTION.
WILL SUPPLIES BE FORTHCOMING? PREMIER NOW SANGUINE. The Prime Minister, who had been in communication with the Wheat B6ard with regard to the question of the wheat shortage, expressed himself yesterday as sanguine that. the absolutely necessary wheat supplies tor the Dominion will be forthcoming. Wellinformed. persons had assured Mr Massey that a considerably larger area of land would. be sown in the South Island this year than last, but he had still, been somewhat uneasy as to whether the supplies would be adequate to carry the country over till the earliest, of the new season’s crop will be available at the end of February next From 600 000 to 800,0000 bushels of the last purchase of wheat from 'Australia had yet to be delivered; but, in consequence of the scarcity of wheat in Melbourne and Sydney and the drought prevailing in many parts of the wheat-growing areas, it was feared that'the Commonwealth Government might be unable to fulfil its contract, The communication with the Wheat Board have, however, tended to dispel that fear.
