A FALL IN EXPORTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAN D, Tuesday. The total value of the exports from Fiji for 1918 was £1,050,005, as against £2,251,570 for 1917. A big drop was in sugar, mainly due to labour shortage. Sugar totalled £981,018 for 1918, the k-west for several years. In 1.917 the total value stood at £1,185,040, while 19.10 was a record year, the figure standing at £1,729,058.
Bananas show a big decrease. The figures for 191(3-17 auu 1918 were £205,----122, £109,715, and £1;52,577. The falling off in 1917 was due entirely to the shipping strike in Australia, and lastyear to the epidemic and the strike. Thousands of pounds worth of bananas simply rotted' on the ground, and the growers' losses were very heavy indeed.
A bright feature is the increase in copra, hi 10.18 a total of 19,318 tons (worth £409,;5;J2) was exported, as against J.5,:]6S tons, the previous largest total (worth ,*t",59,'17_.) in 1917. Other exports, principally rubber, sieishell and molasses, yielded £-72,838 for 11)18, as against £53,72S for 1017.
