THE KUT BLUNDER.
A BITTER WAIL.,
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) (Keecivcd Tuesday, at a.m.) LONDON, Sundap.
General Townshend, in a speech at Norwich ,bitterly denied the criticism on the surrender of Jlut-el-Amara, in the newly published book by Mr Candler ,the oflicial correspondent with the relief force in Mesopotamia.
■He said that there was ,gravo reasons, well known to the garrison, but unknown to Mr Candlcr, why he asked for speedy relief. He sent a message to the Commander-in-Chief that he would not remain at Kut unless guaranteed relief within a month. The Com-mander-in-Chie£ guaranteed, but failed to carry out his promise.
By remaining at Kut he saved Mesopotamia.
He was only able to hold out as long as he did by compelling the Arabs to reveal buried grain under houses and
elsewhere.
