A TIMELY WARNING.
The Minister of Public Health issued a timely warning yesterday in connection with the possible recrudescence of the influenza epidemic in New Zealand. His remarks should be carefully noted by the Borough Council, the health authorities in Masterton, % and the general public. The Hon. G. W. Bussell says:— "A serious obligation rests on the local authorities. If there is a recrudescence and the disease is able to feed on the slum conditions revealed previously, it would be to the everlasting disgrace of the people of thosi districts. The things requiring urgent attention were slum areas in some of the cities, congestion in boarding houses, and the cleansing of homes and backyards. The responsibility was twofold, first on the individual, and secondly on the local authority. Overlapping and dual control cannot be pleaded now." It would be interesting to know what steps have been taken in Masterton to fight the epidemic should it return. We cannot afford to take chances. We must be ready for a possible fight, and not leave our preparations till tho last moment.
