ENTERTAINMENTS.

THOMPSON PAYNE PIOTTJBES.

A TREBLE STAR PROGRAMME,

To-night the usual mid-week change j will be given at the T.P. Electric Cm- I ema, when no less than three star fea- j tures will be shown. A grand Broadway feature will be that entitled '' The Hand of God," in which Miss Naomi Childcrs and little Bobby Connelly will have the leading roles. This is an exceptional drama, and, should draw good houses. The further adventures of Terence O'Rourke will be shown in a line drama entitled "The King and the Man," in which splendid acting greatly enhances a capital plot. Triangle Keystones of late havo been exceptionally good, and are rapidly growing in popularity. Tonight the management will present their latest production, "Bath Tub Troubles," in which Fred Mace takes charge of the leading role, and is really remarkable in his numerous impersonations. This is another good humorous play, reflecting great credit on the part of. the director, Mack Sennctt. A strong supporting series will include "Feathers and Fluff," a fine study, two war topicals, "Prisoners in Kcysin," and "Patho War Gazette." A ripping comedy selection in "Will a Woman Tell?'"' will also be shown. On page 1 the management draw attention to the fact of their new film services, which include a really splendid selection.

THE COSY THEATRE

Quite the most important event this evening in Masterton will be the opening of the new Costy Theatre. The opening ceremony will be performed by His 'Worship the Mayor and Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., and a first-class Jot of pictures have been arranged. To-night will see the first screening of Metro pictures, for which the company have made an expensive contract, which we feel sure has been justified, as these pictures are among the leading photo-plays. Several supporting items have been arranged. Special music will be provided by "The Cosy Orchestra.' As the management have arranged for three changes weekly —'Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday —this programme can only be shown to-night, when it must make way for a double feature programme arriving for Thursday.

"THE BIRTH OF A NATION."

At Henderson Is this (Wednesday) morning the box plans for the forthcoming production of the world-famed film, "The Birth of a Nation," "wore opened. Tho picture will be presented under the direction of -I. C. Williamson, Ltd., and the first presentation will take place in the Masterton Town Hall on Saturday evening, December 9th. It, is usual for pictures to arrive through the post. In the case of "The Birth of a Nation," the firm of .1. C. Williamson, Ltd., send a technical staff under a stage director, with properties and effects, projecting machines, and all the equipment necessary to produce the spectacle on a

scale hitherto unattempted in this country. Founded on tho Rev. Thomas Dixon 's book, "The Clansman," the production gives one a comprehensive view of all the principal events of the American Civil War, in three hours of some of the most thrilling scenes yet seen on the screen, and many of them as nearly historically correct as is possible. Interest never ceases for a moment, and the marvellously staged scenes of battle are succeeded by tender domestic episodes in the lives of the particular characters. Thero is constant contrast, and the work of a true artist is seen in the brilliant triple climax, the audience seeing three great struggles—for life, for honour and for victory—practically simultaneously. The accompanying music will be played by a special orchestra, and will be a feature of the production.
