GERMANS COMPLETELY DEFEATED AT VAUX.
(High Commissioner's Cable.)
LONDON, Saturday
French official: In the Champagne district, west of Moutten, some of the enemy elements which penetrated our small advanced posts following an intense bombardment, were dislodged by French grenade counterattacks. In the Argonne region yesterday evening a German attack on a salient in our line, west of La Fille Morte, was repulsed after a lively combat. A second attack, launched at eight in the evening, equally failed. West of the Meuse our four positions on Hill 304 and our second lines were subjected to violent bombardments. East of the Meuse fighting continued at Vaux Fort with, the same violence. All attempts of the enemy on our trenches west and east of the fort were repulsed. The Germans multiplied furious assaults against the fort., despite ravages caused by our curtain and machine gun fire, but the enemy were completely defeated. During the night fractions of the enemy penetrated a trench m our north work, the interior of which we maintained ourselves.
