ART UNION ABANDONED.
OPPOSITION TO AUCKLAND SCHEME.
By Association.)
AUCKLAND,- Tuesday. •The-holding of an art union "for the purpose of advertising the Auckland Exhibition" has been abandoned by the promoter (Mr Bris Doyle), and arrangements are being made for the return of the money, which represents quite a considerable sum. The intention was to give a first prize of a gold nugget valued at £300, and a second pr-ize of a gold nugget valued at £100. Tickts were sold at 2s each. The scheme has aroused intense opposition in various quarters, one result of which was a recent disclaimer by the exhibition'executive of any connection with it. Mr Doyle had a license from the Minister of Internal Affairs to conduct the art union, notwithstanding which he has decided lor' various reasons, and partly at the request of the president of the exhibition (Mr G. Elliott), not to proceed with the scheme.
