A SHOOTING AFFRAY.

FOLLOWS DOMESTIC TEOUBLES,

(By Telegraph. — Press Association.) LEVIN, Tuesday. At the Levin S.M. Court to-day John Horrox Whellan appeared charged with shooting at John Wilkinson, with in- ! tent to do bodily harm. The police statement showed that the ,-■ charges arose out of domestic iitfelintyf Wilkinson arrived in Levin onitpuday night, ostensibly to see the-A||Hfiltural and Pastoral show next Wednesday. Whellan tracked him to his (Whellan 's) house, and found him in the bedroom. Wilkinson ran out, and Whellan fired twice at him with a revolver, but did not hit him. Whellan's counsel submitted that Whellan had no intent to do more than frighten Wilkinson, over whom he had had previous marital disagreements. Interrogated by the Bench Wilkinson said he had no fear of Whellan repeating the offence with which he was charged. Mr Blenkhorn, who was counsel for /-» 'Whellan, submitted that his client in the worse physical condition of the two. It was obvious ho had no intent to do actual harm, and it was the false outcry by Wilkinson that ho had been shot that had caused -Whellan mental ..distress'and caused Whellan to alarm the neighbourhood. Dectectives Lewis, who for the police, objected to the prßteal to have accused admitted to on his own recognisances, but the Bench, Messrs Gardener and Kemington, J.P.s, eventually took this course, it being pointed but that the accused, compara tively a recent arrival in Levin, might have difficulty in obtaining outside bail. The case was remanded to February 3rd, bail being granted on Whollan'ss own recognisance of £50, conditional on. reporting himself daily to the polite, r^
