The Ashhurst races were held to-day iv fine weather. Additional results were :— Ashhurst Guineas, one mile.—Waihola, 5.5, 1; Waitoto, 8.5, 2; Kotaha, 8.5,3. Only starters. Won anyhow. Time, lmin 47 l-ssec. Ashhurst Cup, of 350 soys; one and a-quarter miles.— Waipaku, 8.1, i ; Sandstream. 9.10, 2; Parable, 6.12, 3. Also started—LainsdoTif, Comedian, Perolina, Goodwin Park, Thetis. Won by a length. Time, 2min lOsec. Komako Welter, seven furlougs.— Midian, 8.9, 1; Waipuuui, 9.2, 2; First Cousul, 8. Won easily. Time, lmin 30sec.
Pohaugiua Haudicap, six furlougs. —Boanerges, 7.7, 1; St. Bill, 9.9, 2; Thera, 6.10, 3. Won by a length. Time, lmin 14 l-ssec.
Maiden Hack, four ancl a-half fur-longs—-Gladiole.iS.O, 1; Pukewai, 8.7, 2; Celebrity, 8.11, 3. Wou by a length. Time, 56sec.
Gorge Handicap, seveu furlongs.— Thetis, 8.12, 1; Parable, 8.3, 2; Waikaraka, 3. Won by half a length. Time, lmin 30sec.

By their victories at the Manawatu meeting, the following have been penalisd iv their engagements at Tauherenikau ou New Year's Day :—Tuhitarata Handicap: Lord Soult, Tibs, 10.1. Pukio Hack: Polymorphous, leibs. 8.5. Reynolds Haudicap: Sir Antrim, 121bs, 5.7. A cable message from Loudou this Wfiek stated that "there was excitement in racing circles as to whether D. Maher, the crack Americau jockey, would ride Neil Gow or Lemberg in the Epsom Derby. The owners ottered large retainers. Maher has accepted the mount on Neil Gow." The race in question will not be decided for six months vet. Neil Gow and Lemberg were the crack two-year-olds for the season just coucluded. D. Maher was born at Hartford. Connecticut, on October 29th, ISBI. He rode his first winner in England at Manchester on September 21st, 1900. He has riddeu over one hundred winners in each of the past six seasons. Iv 1908 he headed the list of winning horsemen, auri for the season just closed was secoud on the list, F. Wootton being first. Maher's record is all the more wonderful because for the past two seasons he has beeu uuable to ride under 8.6.
The totahsator returns for the three days of the Mauawatu meeting were £32,65(3, as against £37,04. for last year—a decrease of £4386. The ex-New Zealand trainer, D. J. Price, now has fourteen horses in work at Canlfield. The full list is as follows :—Pink 'Un, Marsovia, Motoa, Saltare, Serenade, Golden Cain, Coir, Bribery, Ngatifa. Maui. Tynedale, Ataahua, Gipsy Witch, aud an unnamed two-year-old brother to Peterbof. , , Mr H. McManaway, owner of North East, Mahuta and Co., has purchased a property at Rata whereon he intends putting down a private track, and liis horses, uuder the charge of Mick King, have moved thither. Kata is situated on the Rangitikei river between Martou and Huuterville. iv the latter of which towns Mr McManaway is licensee of a large hotel. The Waitaia-trained Dr Shimose has broken down.
Forty-six lots will be submitted for auction at Mr S. H. Gollau's dispersal sale nu the 12th of next mouth. The list cousists of three stallions, twenty-eight brood mares, three two-year-oids. and twelve yearlings, eleven ot whom are by Signalman and one by Sylvia Park. The Special Commissioner in the London Sportsman states that he is in a position to contradict the report that the Austrian Government offered £50,000 fur Bayardo. They might safely do so. no doubt, adds Mr Allison, for Mr Fairie is not likely to sell at that or any other price. Why should he?
