It is to be regretted that there should be auy division of opinion in Masterton with respect to the New Year holidays, but, unfortunately, in holiday matters, too many cooks spuil the broth. Among our holiday cooks we have to reckon with the Borough Council, with a Holiday Committee and with a Chamber of Commerce, and we are controlled by the Factory Act, the Shop and Offices Act and awards innumerable. Our holiday celebration, accordingly, seems to be drifting into a go-as-you-please observance, a wary eye being, of course, kept ou the complicated ordinances which deal with the question. No wonder, if uuder such conditions, there can bo no general concensus of opinion, and no one in authority capable of exercising au undivided control. Ttiis time there is simply a holiday muddle and we see no way of straightening it out.
