MASTERTON I. v. CARTERTON I.

(By "The Bowles.")

This senior championship match was commenced at Carterton on Saturday last. Masterton batted first, and compiled 110 runs, Moorehpuse (45), Redmoud (25j and" Porry (14) beiug the only batsmen to reach double figures. At the call of timo, Cartertou had lost four wickets for 60 runs, Smart (25), Tuunicliffe (12) and Hart (11) being the chief contributors. The detailed scores are:—

MASTERTON I.—First Innings — H. Moorehouse, b Feast, 45; A. Essou, c Hawke, b Sievers, 3: W. Redmond, b Tunuiclilfe. 24; O. Perry, c Feast, b Sievers, 14; C. J. Mackellar, b Feast. 6; E. H. Crookendeu, b Feast, 0; W. Iggulden, b Feast, 2; A. Caselberg, b Feast, 6; Ibbotson, c Fairbrother, b Sievers, 3; Edwards, b Stovers, 1; A. Thompson, not out, 0; extras, 6; total, 110.

Bowling analysis.—S. Feast 5 for 21, Sievers 4 for 32, Tunniclilfe 1 for 13, Phelps 0 for 19, Smith 0 for 19.

OARTERTON I.—First InningsHart, c Mackellar, b Moorehouse, 11; Tunniciffe, b Crookendeu, 12; Smart, c and b Redmond, 25; Hawke. not out, 9; Smith, st Essou, b Moorehouse, 0; extras, 3; total for four wickets, 60.

Considering the recent wet weather, the wicket was in excellent condition, but the outfield still requires more preparation. The total made by the Masterton team was disappointing, considering at one period of the game, 4 wickets were down for 92 runs. Moorehouse gave an excellent display of batting for his 45 ruus, his hitting all rouud the wicket was a treat to witness, aud I will be surprised if a century does not appear opposite his name, before he has played many innings. Redmond played cautiously for his runs, being content to play himself into form. Perry made his runs by careful cricket. None of the other batsmen gave., the bowlers much trouble, several of them being under the impression that slow bowling could be lifted to the boundary with strokes which resemble "mowing." S. Feast, with his "slows," came out with the fine analysis of 5 for 21. He kept a good length, with a high delivery which appeared to puzzle some of the batsmen. Sievers bowled well, aud obtained 4 wickets at a score of 32 ruus. Of the Carterton batsmen, Smart played good cricket for his runs, although his innings was marred by a chance. Tuunicliffe made some good drives, his innings being free cricket throughout. Hart's contribution was by careful cricket. Moorehouse bowled better than his analysis shows, aud obtained two wickets; Redmond aud Crookendeu each obtained a wicket. Esson was in his excellent form, behind the wickets, his "stumping" of Smith being a smart piece of work.
