The Natal Mercury says that Mr Gladstone's appointment is the worst possible selection.

The Transvaal Leader says that Mr Gladstone's experience with the Suffragettes will qualify him to handle the Asiatic passive resistors. The Star says that if the choice is limited to the present Cabinet one might go further and fare worse. LONDON, Yesterday. The Times strongly opposes the appointment of members of the Government to three great positions becoming vacant in India, Canada and Africa, especially the appointment of failures or nonentities.
