Hyde, Government Poultry Expert, who has been visiting Auckland, says that the poultry industry is making remarkable progress throughout the" Dominion, but in no place has there beou •such a marked advance as iv Auckland province. It is the largest exporting centre, and the quantity of egss put through the Auckland Government Grading Depot last year, amounting to about oue aud a-half millions, was just treble the output of any other province. As further demonstration of the progress of the Northern province in this respect, Mr Hyde quoted figures to show that during the period from April to October iv the present year 1,1M5),310 eggs were put through the Auckland depot, as compared with 2(W,BH(i eggs for the corresponding period iv 11)00. MiHyde added" that it is reasonable to anticipate that by the end of the season in March next two aud a-half million eggs will have passed through the depot. When in Auckland. Mr Hyde received a visit from the officers of the Salvation Army Inebriate Home at Bell's Islaud. The motive of the visit was to ask his opinion in connection with the establishment of a poultry farm ou A,, island. The proposal is to find employment for the habitual drunkards cousigned to the retreat, by running au up-to-date poultry farm. Iv Mr Hyde's opinion the proposal is an excellent one, aud will provide the residents of the island with interesting and remunerative work. Ou his retnru to Auckland in February, lie will make a personal inspection of the locality.
