NEW YORK, Yesterday,

Yesterday afternoon the Atlautic fleet of the' United States navy, uuder Mio command of Rear-Admiral Robert Evans, started ou its voyage to tho Pacific by way of the Straits of Magellan.

The journey is expected to last 140 days, and the "fleet will comprise fiftythree vessels carryiug 850 guns, aud crews aggregating 10,000 men. President Roosevelt, ou board the Mayflower, reviowed the fleet, aud led the' squadron out of the bay amid mighty strains of music. Tho spectacle was a highly impressive one. LONDON, Yesterday. The Times says President Roosevelt's enthusiasm is thoroughly British, in being leavened by strong practical sense. The solid practical aims of this cruise make for a demonstration of the views expouudod in his latest Message to Congress. It expresses confidence that Mr Roosevelt lias takeu such measures as will defeat any attempt by Labour politicians to turu this visit to Pacific p 'ts iuto a dangerous demonstration.
