A BISHOP ON GAMBLING.
The Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Neligan) is reported by a Waikato paper to have made some very strong remarks about sport and gambling in a sermon at Hamilton a few night ago. Our conteraporaay quotes his Lordship as saying:—" The tote most damnable thing in New Zealand to-day. It is the engine of the devil that is driving souls to hell. You may say that it is a Government institution, but the Government of this country is not the first that the devil has used for his purposes. In connection with your racecourses and your tote betting is to be found every sin that is damning souls to-day." The Bishop instanced the "pulling" of horses, and declared that the foot races at ordinary athletic sports were not " run straight."
