LIFE INSURANCE.

A Novel Development

One curious feature of industrial life in the potteries district of Staffordshire is the insurance of a person's life by a second person. The business of the insurance companies there is largely directed to persuading people to insure the lives of others as a speculation. Wives are urged to insure their husbands, and sons and daughters lo take out a policy on their parents' lives. For a penny a week a girl insures her father for £5. No medical examination is required, and it is simply a gamble on death. This was amusingly shown by a recent case. A doctor in one of the pottery towns was reported to be dying of cancer. The rumour was false, and the doctor, completely recovered of his illness, was surprised to learn that his charwoman had staked twopence a week on his death.
