Sports Committee

A meeting of the general Committee of the above was held in the Council Chambers, Carterton, on Friday evening, the Mayor (Mr Jas. Brown) presiding. Correspondence was received from Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R., accepting the position of Patron, and enclosing a donation. From Mr Howard Booth, accepting position of Patron. From Mr E. Jury stating that Mr C. J. Jury was unable to accept position of Patron, owing to absence from the Colony. From Mr P. Molloy accepting position of Vice-president. From Secretary of the Foresters' Lodge stating that Bro. J. Fisher had been appointed delegate on the Procession Committee. From Secretary Carterton Brass Band stating that they had appointed Mr Toomath to act on the Procession Committee. From Secretary Totara Lodge, stating that Bro. 11. MeKenzie had been appointed on the Procession Committee. From Secretary Oddfellows' Lodge, notilying that Bro. P. Molloy had been appointed on the Procession Committee. From Secretary Fire Brigade, stating that Mr W. Campbell had been appointed on the Procession Committee. Mr W. Tucker reported that Mr W. Partridge had been appointed ttf represent the Recliabite Lodge on the Procession Committee. From Mr Ulic Shannon, asking for the handicapping, his fee being £3, -which he would donate to the object.—Accepted. The Programme Committee submitted their programme, with about twenty-three events, and a total prize money of £76 15s. The largest item on the programme was a band inarching contest, with a total prize money of £20, first prize being £15 and second £5. There are also three fire brigade events, one, three and five men respectively, total prize money £10. The programme was adopted. Ml- Toomath, the Carterton Band's delegate, reported that the Masterton, Greytown, and Featherston bands had been written to, and from replies were likely to take part. The Eketahuna, Paliiatua, and two of the Wellington bands had also been written toMr Campbell, of the Fire Brigade, reported that he had written to the various brigades to help in the fire brigade events. A report was received from the Finance Committee and discussed. It was decided that the Committee meet the last Friday of every month, at 7.30 p.m. Th.3 action of Mr Mansfield, in engaging Victoria Hall for Boxing Night (the day of the Sports) was endorsed, and it was decided to hold a concert and dance. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs A. Brown, E. Eagle, J. Nicholls, W. Erickson, and Cr. A. Fairbrother, were appointed to suggest names of judges, stewards, and gate-keepers for the Sports. The Treasurer and President were appointed to sign cheques. Mr W. Toomath was appointed on the Side Show Committee, and a meeting was arranged for next Tuesday evening. The Programme Committee were appointed an advertising committee, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Railway Department to ascertain whether the name of this gathering could be put on their posters for that day. The appointment of a permanent secretary was held over.
