London, Last Night. General Stoessel has been wounded in the leg.
Five warships in the harbour have been sunk.
The south-west corner of the town is in flames.
The Japanese have novV connected their various tunnels, and fitted them with mines.
French advices from St. Petersburg state that General Stoessel informed the Czar that the garrison were reduced almost to their last shell. All the long range guns are either destroyed or out of action. "We cannot hold the fortress," he reported. " but we can die fighting for Russia, and we will."
Mr Bennett Burleigh, the Daily Telegraph's war correspondent, saw from a steamer three huge successive .explosions on Wednesday, possibly in New Town, Port Arthur.
The Daily Telegraph's Chefoo correspondent, cabling on Thursday, stated that the latest Japanese assault on Port Arthur had been repulsed with heavier losses than had occurred during any previous attack.
The Daily Telegraph's correspondent with General Oku's army states tnat a terrific engagement is imminent.
