THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.

At the meeting of the Mastertou Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon, the Chairman (Mr M. Caselborg) brought up the question of the Master' ton business peoplo observing a close holiday on tueMonday prior to Christmas Day, He said, personally, ho was against the proposal. Monday, he thought, would be the business day, and they had so very few busy days, that it would bo au injury to trado in town to close that day. He was aware that a movement was on foot to extend the holidays, hut this, he thought, had omanated from tho employes. Very dull business times had been experienced of late, and there had been so many enforced holidays, that it would bo suicidal for tradesmen to close up, He would like to hear the opinion of tho business men present, Mr Graham cxprossed his concurrence with, the previous speaker's sentiments, lie jib thought' lliatpublic opinion was against tho holiday on Monday. Mr Stempa said, from a butcher's point of view, it was imperative that they shonld'keop open on Monday, as it was hardly likely that customers would purchaso their week's supply of meat on the Saturday. He suggested that Thursday (as that day was not generally a very brisk one for trado) should be a holiday, instead of Monday.' Tho Chairman was of tho opinion that that suggcition was not very foasiblo. Tho impccnnioi|s inhabitants of Mastertou who could only afford to purchaso a limited quantity of goods at a tinio, therefore would bo obliged to replenish by Thursday. It would also inconvenience dairymen, who would have to milk and churn, and if they are unabfo Ip got t|eir butter on tho market, a considerable loss would be incurred. ' Mr Murray thought fho maftor' had beou delayed too long, and it was now rather late;io deal with it. Sufficient timo was not available to enable farmors to be notified of the holiday, Ho thought that on some other occasion steps to secure a holiday might bo instituted earlier.

It was decided, on tho motion of Mr Daniell, seconded by Mr Coradiue, that in the opinion of the meeting, it is undosirablo to close on Monday.
