The senior " rep." practice held at Carterton 011 Saturday was an exceptionally good one, although full teams did not put in an appearance. From the ranks of the fifteen, H. Wrigley, Ross, W. Thompson and Wntson failed to answer their names, Wrigley and Watson being unavoidably absent, and Eoss and Thompson suffering from recent injuries, were quite unfit for work. Thirteen of the chosen ones weroplaced opposite the next fourteen, and tlio spectators were treated to some brilliant play on both sides. The game ultimately resulted in a defeat of the probables by 11 pointstolO. McMasterscored a try for the winners, and Emmett upheld his reputation as a placekicker by converting two goals from marks. Maguire and Kiddie scored tries for the losers, E. Udy placing (bom over the bar. Tho junior practice at Greytown was also a good representative one, although nearly all the players seemed to be playing for themselves, and any combination was out of the question, This is scarcely to be wondered at, however, when the honor of being chosen as a " rep." was at stake, and .the final practico of the picked team should remedy this serious fault. It may be hardly fair to criticise the "rep" teams as appear above, as the final will not be picked till next Saturday evening, and there, is sure to be further alterations in the selections. Ono grave mistake is appatent in tho senior back division, and that is the lack of a fast scoring man. By placing Wrigley anywhere from his recognised place as full back, it is trifling with the foundation of the team, and would, I fear, prove disastrous in foreign matches. The team must compose both scoring and defensive backs, and as it now appears, McGovern is the only one who can claim to be dangerous in the former department. On the defence, however, the team isalmost perfect, but a fast wing three-quarter would greatly increase their chances on tho attack, This wouid place McGovern again in the centre, where he would prove far moro useful than 011 the wing. This player's brilliant work in feeding his men at tho right time, in last year's matches, should be quite . sufficient to keep him in that posit tion, In the forwards, 0. Moore and Emmett have replaced Cadwalkder ajid Morris, The former deserves his place a 6 Carterton's best forward, and is an improvement to the team. Emmott's brilliant game on Saturday surprised everyone, and with all the picked forwards against . him, played one of the finest games pn tho ground, A like

; performance next Saturday, will mako liim a certainty for inclusion. Olliver and Cress are also likely men whose claims will undoubtedly, be discussed. The inability of Gray and Mitchell to travel with the team will weaken it somewhat, and if they were included in the probableplayers tho task of' the Selection Committee would bo easier. As it is, several forwards are now almost on a par, and it behoves everyone mentioned in the' fifteen and eighteen to take part in thegamo next Saturday. The Juniors as now chosen include six of the Kotaliitangi team, four Lied Stars, and five Featherston, and tho final selection will not alter tho Committee's decision to a very great extent.

Wellington was absent fitm the practice, but as undoubtedly the most dashing forward in the Star Club, and among the best of last year's Junior " reps," will probably be included in the final. The fixtures for tho Junior Union trophy for next Thursday are White Stars v Parkvale at Mastorton ; and Orientals v Hovers at Cartcrlon, The Ponekes defeated the Melrose team oil Saturday by three points to nil, and Athletics beat Wellington

by [I points to 8. A representative trial match is to he played at Wellington next Saturday. Tho teams are as follows: A team.—Davidson, Hales, Do Joux, lionclie, Bamnbor, Crawford, Price, Church, P. Young, Swindley, Pauling, Poland, A, Campbell, I'ringle, Hardcastlo. B TKAM.-Bourke, Roberts, Galloway, Warwick, Kelly, Pudney, J. Kelly, McKenzie, White, Johnston, McLean, Gallagher, McAually, Laugliton, Calnan,
