TINUI.
(from our own correspondent.)
March 9. According to notice the public meeting came off, as convened, on Saturday afternoon. This meeting was called to test the advisibility of procuring a resident doctor, The number present was hardly as numerous as was anticipated. Several settlers spoko as to the urgent necessity of the undertaking, and various suggestions were expressed as to the amount required as a guarantee, the funds to be collected, &c., after which matters took a more practical turn by appointing a committee, composed of the following gentlemen Messrs Maunsell, Mackay, Mcflutchon, Nicholls, Armstrong, Oarswell, Groves, and' Fabian. The members of the Committee then present met, and it was moved that Mr Maakay take the chair, and that five form a quorum. Various suggestions were moved and carried, expediating this movement, The committee meet again on Saturday, the 13th inst., when subscription lists will be opened, and the services M a medical practitioner called for forthwith. The Races and Sports Committee should have met on Saturday also, but this appears to have fallen through, owing, I believe, to the want of accommodation, the hotel still being closed, and the public are naturally enquiring how long this state of things is going to last. The races this Easter will be held at Castle on this account.
Business here is at a standstill. Things in their aspect, have not been so bad for a number of years, To go shopping it is necessary to travel eight miles, either to Upper or Lower Whareama, or twelvo miles t n Castle Point. Fortunately* at Mrs Cripps' store, goods can always be obtained at reasonable prices and of the best quality, but the distance is not convenient to all, It is surprising that some enterprising individual does not erect an opposition store here, Report says that £l2,oo,has been offered and refused !for the Tenui Storfe and furniture, with'the odds and endsiof furniture it contains. If this is true, the proprietors must have faith in the future. Mr McHutchon's new hotel at Whakataki is progressing favorably, and will (be finished this month. It will be large and commodious.
. - Although business is dull, this part of Coast, with Castle Point, is generally active. This is no doubt owing to two steamers calling) weekly, and imports and exports. The s, s. Kiwi arrived from'
Napier on Friday, and shipped about fifty bales of wool for Wellington. The . Go-ahead called on Saturday, and took in a considerable quantity of wool, aiid several passengers for Wellington. I hear Messrs. Johnston intend. (weather permitting) running this steamer to Castle Point with excursionists . for the races. " "THis""will bei quite a novelty, and will,'no ' doubt, pay well.' J Phillips' brake arrived in good this evening. I fear he does not receive' r much encouragement. It is high time. [ the' mail td'ok a diflferent route. .This would go a long way ;to.-.make'this enter- , : prise a success. Ml - ■ March 10th. " ■ The mail'did not; arrive till late thisowing to the road being ..stopped according to notice, given by landowners. t The mailman, it appears, had to take a ' wide circuit to got around the newly : ' erected fence. This, delay can easily be overcome by altering the route.
