FEATHERSTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Featherston Highway Board took place at the Institute, Greytown, on Saturday last. Present-Messrs J. 'fully (chairman), Jas! Donald, Alfred Matthews, and Thomas Walker. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed, the following financial report was laid on the table :- Greytown-, Nov. 29,1879. To the Chairman and Members of The Featherston Highway Board, Gentlemen,—l have the honor to report that during the beginning of this month the Government have paid die first moiety of the subsidy on rates, viz., £785 13s; also, that in answer to the application made by the Board, the Wairarapa West County Council have paid the subsidy for road maintenance for October deducting therefrom.however. the amount paid by the Government to the Board as share of County fund, Summarising the receipts of cash during the past month, they appear as lollows,- ° £ s.'d. Government subsidy on rates, Ist moiety 78513 0 County subsidy for maintenance of road 20 8 4 Rates reveived 18 15 g Special contribution from Mr James Donald for road formation at Swamp, South Featherston 33 0 0 Total ... _ £857 16 10 The present credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand at Greytown is £272 6s 3d, and the amount of outstanding rates is £2317s 3d, I have, tvc,, H. H. Wolters, Clerk. Accounts amounting in the aggregate to T 295 were then examined and ordered to be paid,

The Clerk was instructed to take legal proceedings for the recovery of the rates remaining unpaid. Mr Tully here stated that urgent private business compelled him to absent himself from the rest of the meeting, and Mr Donald took the chair. The correspondence consisted of some letters from the Wairarapa iVeat County County Council, requesting the Board to point out more definitely what action it desired to have taken in the matter of the public drains in. the district, and requesting information in reference to the amounts received by the Board from the Government, an share of County Funds. It was resolved that the Engineer be instructed to effect certain necessary repair to the roads leading to Messrs Morrison and Watt's properties, also that Mr Mason, the Resident Engineer of the Railway Works be written to, requesting him to have the road at Woodside diver" ted, so as to lead past station. The Clerk was instructed to arrange for the insurance of the Waihenga Hotel by the present lessee in favor of the Chairman of the Board; also to inform Mr Martin that, as he appears to have cut up and sold portions of a public road as Martinborough town sections, the sale thereof is illegal, and that the Board does not intend to relinquish its claim to the road. It was understood that under certain conditions an exchange of roads with Mr Martin might he arranged, at the same time it was decided that any proposal having that object must emanate from Mr Martin, and not from the Board. The motions of which Mr Phillips gave notico at the last meeting, to the effect that the Engineer confine his duties solely to the Board, and that, any Warden requiring his.services give a month's notice officially to the Board, lapsed, owing to the non-attendance of Mr Phillips.

The Clerk called attention to a letter published in one of the local newspapers, and suggesting the publication in extenso of the accounts passed for payment, The Board very properly were of opinion that they had nothing whatever to do with the reports which the newspapers chose to publish, or the form in which they chose to publish them; that it was rather a matter for the consideration of the newspaper reporters, but that ratepayers and persons interested could always examine the minute book if they required any information, It was decided to have tenders called for re-flooring the Ruamahunpa Bridge at Waihenga, with 2 inch pine planking. The meeting then adjourned,
