TINUI

(from our own correspondent. ) October 29, 1879.

The weather continues fine, although appearances for the last few days has been threatening. The farmers are fortunate in this respect for shearing operations. The clip, I hear, is satisfactory, and the lambing on some places as high as 100 per cent, This, of course, does not go through large flocks, but 80 appears to be the average,

The meeting re Cemetery, which was to have come off last Saturday, lapsed, owing, I hear, to the committee not being in attendance,

A meeting of the Fishing Club was held in the afternoon, and it was decided to commence operations as soon as the settlers can spare time. It is not generally known that there exists a Fishing Club at Tenui. The fishing ground visited on these excursions is the Whareama river. The Club owns a good boat and net, and in the summer months small parties are organised, who leave Tenui in the afternoon, returning next day with a plentiful supply of fresh fish. Although the distance to and from the river is considerable, those interested take a pleasure in the sport, which is the only means here of obtaining this wholesome article of diet. At last, I hear, it has been decided to build Miller's new hotel on the old site. Although there has been considerable delay in arriving at this conclusion, now that a tangible understanding has come about, Mr Russell, the contractor, I am informed, is to arrive shortly, and will push on the work expeditiously, so that it is quite likely that before the next licensing meeting the building will be finished. It is reported that private enterprise intends building an opposition store here —really not before time, for the present apology requires remodelling. The roads are still improving. I see Sutherland & Co's wagon was enabled to go and return from Whakataki to-day, I notice that some of the landslips on the Mungapakeha road have been already removed. No doubt this has been done for convenience, as there appears to have been wheel traffic from the Taueru to Lower Whareama already, and was there £SO or £6O spent in clearing parts of the landslips on this line. It would be a great benefit. I see Johnson's contract is not quite finished. Each end of the embankment across the swamp needs bridging, When this is done and several small contracts attended to, we might then expect to see Cobb's coach, which I hear is waiting. Mr W. Perry passed down this morning with a fine mob of cattle for Masterton. These cattle are from Messrs Maunsell's, Tinui, and W. Johnston's, Castlepoint. I see the schooner Comet finished unloading her cargo on Monday after considerable delay owing to adverse winds, This was about fifty tons for Messrs Johnston's store, which appears to be doing a large business.

It has been very sultry to-day. This evening we have been favored with a heavy thunder shower.
