It will be remembered some few mouths ago that the modern wonder, the phonograph, was exhibited at Wellington. The instrument shown there was slightly feeble and hoarse, and was hardly a success, A much better specimen is now in Mssterton, and is the property of a gentleman who is on a visit to the Borough. Last evening, a trial of its powers was made in the Town Hall, before some halfdozen settlers, who had the privilege of witnessing the experiment. The phonograph is ail instrument with a cylinder, a handle, and a sheet of tinfoil, and is about as simple as it is incomprehensible. It repeats all that it is told as conscientiously as any lady could. It will say the same tiling over and over again, or articulate it backwards, On the present occasion the pathetic ballad of " Old Mother Hubbard" was first recited to it. The handle was then turned, the cylinder revolved, and out came each word audibly and accurately, The phonographic voice resembles the voico which addresses it very much the same way that the stage voico of a ventriloquist resembles his ordinary speech. Amid considerable laughter, a number of little speeches, songs, a flourish from a cornet, a touch of foreign languages, were rattled off by the little machine. One individual who came in late was greeted with an intimation that lie was the party who" stole the pig," The seance was a decided success and we are glad to learn that the owner of the phonograph has consented to give a public exhibition of its marvellous powers for the benefit of some local institution.
