Oct. 20. The first practice of the Carterton Rifle Volunteers took place at the butts on Saturday, nineteen members, under the command of Sergeant 0. Potts, putting in an appearance. The ranges were 200, 300, and 400 yards, five shots at each range, aitd the firing on the whole was very creditable. Private H. Kilminster headed the score at 200 yards, and Private Men at 300 yards with 19 and 18 points respectively out of a possible 20. Corporal Moore made the best aggregate score at the three ranges with 41 points. Privates Kilminster and Allen, who both fell off at the 400 yards range, came next with 39 and 38 points respectively, while the following members scored over 30 points at the three ranges:—Sergt. Harrison, 37 ; Sergt. Shaw, 36; Corporal King, 3G; Private A. Bennett, 35; Private T. Benton, 31. The day was fine with a slight breeze, rather in favor of those firing, but the sun was rather too bright, The usual weekly parade takes place" to-morrow, and the monthly inspection parade on the 28th inst.
A start to proclaim the Carterton Riding a rabbit district has been made, as a petition is now circulating in the district, and a public meeting will be called as soon as the requisite number of signatures have been obtained.
