At the meeting of the Masterton Cricket Club held last evening, the names of some forty members were given in, after which it was decided to adjourn until Monday evening next, A meeting of the Masterton Library Committee was held- yesterday Present —Messrs Peist (in tho chair), Vile, Boddington, Hales and Teakle. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £8 6s lid. Accounts to the amount of £4015s 7d were passed for payment when funds permitted. Tho Secretary was instructed to apply to the Borough Council for half the rates due, as no monies on this account had as yet been paid, The question of the financial position of the Committee was held over for a fuller meeting. Who says that tho Maoris are disappearing 1 They may bo dying off, but they seem to have a curious knack of returning to life at election times, judging from the returns received for the Eastern Maori Electoral District. Before the election it was computed that there were under 1500 adult males in the district, but already 3292 have voted, and fully fiOO more are expected to come in yet. Three thousand two hundred and ninetytwo fighting men in the district! If they co on increasing at this alarming rate we shall soon hear of Te Wlvih invading Europe with a couple of million or so of dusky warriors! Only three months ago 1.300 were all that could be found, and now we have 3800. In three months moro at the same rate there will bo 11,300; in six months 33 650; in nine months, 100,500; and at the end of a year, 300,000.
