A well dressed and respectable looking yonng woman, giving her name as Mary Smith, hired a waterman this afternoon, to take her out in the harbor. After being out some little time, she said to the waterman, "good-bye," jumping overboard. He managed to drag her out of the water, and brought her ashore. She is now iff the hands of the police.
It.is reported that commander Hewitt, R,Ni, of-General Government siuvey office hag been dismissed from the Government employ, for taking an active part in the Hutt election; but it appears that a report was merely lodged against him, but without leading to any result, A meeting will be held this evening for the promotion of chess. The police have under consideration the propriety of taking proceedings respect" ing the public exhibition of photographs alleged to be indecent, but no summons is yet issued. The men employed at the railway works on tho Wellington Foxton line, complain at being paid only monthly, alleging that being without means they cannot wait so long. The Kaiwarra Voluntoers reply to the Government intimation regarding the advisability of the volunteers adopting uniform dress that having recently provided themselves with new uniforms, they do not feel inclined to incur the extra expense, unless the Government chose to supply them with new uniforms, free of expense,
The working men's rights league has resolved that a deputation shall wait on Government, asking them to set aside suitable blocks of land for settlement, to be sold on reasonable terms, that being the best way of promoting settlement of the country.
George Brightiug, hawker, brought ut; charged with burglary at the Upper Hutt was, after a long hearing, committed foi trial.
. Ohmstohurch, Tuesday. The Grand Lodge Session, Order of Odd Fellows, American Constitution, was opened last night under the presidency of R, W. G. W. Brother Wheeler. Fifteen delegates were present. The Grand Lodge will sit daily till Thursday next.
Mrßosselman, manager of the Americai Sewing Machine Depot, died very suddenly last night; it is supposed from hear disease.
The official declaration of the poll foi Coleridge was made to-day, the number! being the same as previously transmittei on Monday night.
Some thieves broke open a shop belonghig to Mr Garrett, of Ashburton, and stole a quantity of tobacco, but were disturbed by the owner returning before they had secured further booty. At the Resident Magistrate's Court Henry .Robertson, charged with issuing a valueless cheque was further remanded. At the Christchurch Court, Jane Mahoney, charged with forging a cheque on her husband, was remanded toßanriora.
Six drawing-room cars, have arrived from America for the railway Department. These cars which are beautifully fitted up, are intended to be used with express trains. Only one of tho cars has yet been put together.
