AFRICAN EXPLORATION.
Dr. J. Mullens, the Foreign Secretary of the London Missionary Society, is, says the Academy, about to take a journey of considerable importance to Eastern Africa, He proceeds in the first instance to Zanzibar, whence he will go to Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika, where a party despatched by his Society have recently formed a settlement. On the road, however, lie will have a task to perform which will need much address on his part, for we hear that the caravan which was going up from the coast with supplies to the value of £2OOO for the missionaries at Ujiji is detained by King Mirambo. This caravan was in charge of Mr Philippe Broyon, who, it will be remembered, was first brought into notice by the Marseilles Geographical Society some two years ago as the son-in-law of Mirambo, which relation ship is denied by the French missionaries. Having arranged this delicate business, and we trust satisfactory, Dr Mullens will organise the settlement of Ujiji and put matters there on a proper footing, That done, lie will turn his attention more purely to geographical works, and from
reputation as an ardent geographer there can be little doubt of his adding considerably to our knowledge of the lake regions, Dr Mullens' programme includes, we believe, the exploration of the shores of lake Tanganyika, the investigation of the phenomena connected with it, and the examiof the absolutely unknown tract of country between the south end of that lake, and the north end ofLakeNyassa, in which it is not impossible that he may anticipate Mr Keith Johnson in a portion of the work sketched out for him by the African Exploration fund committee. Dr Mullens takes out with him an ample outfit of scientific instruments, of which he will be sure to make good use.
