TINUI

[from our own correspondent.] July 30,1879. The weather still continues bad. On Saturday we had a refreshing north-west breeze, and were in hopes that the weather would take up; but alas 1 human hopes, how often disappointed.

The Tinui bridge is now undergoing repairs. The top has been taken off and pile-driving has commenced. This structure will be very much strengthened, and flm although the unfavorable weathor will retard its progress, it is hoped it will be made passable soon, as fording the river in flood time is not pleasant, I hear most of the settlers aro gettin» short of stores, and the only modo of transit is very expensive, as the only available place of supply is Johnston's storo at Caatlepoint, Tlu mail-carrier hist Thursday took sij hour 3in coming from Caatlepoint. This delay was caused by his horse fallipg lame. The in-coming mails are of lato much behind time. Whilst in a great measure the bad state of roads are to bo taken into consideration, it is quits evident that the stages made are too long. Tin? matter should be attended to if v?o are to get our mails in proper time. I am informed that the Government Life Assurance Agency is oponed at our Post f'ffice. This is a step in the direction. Those now desirous of avail? ing themselves of its benefits will receive all information from the Postmaster. The Money Order and Savings Bank Depart-' ment is much required hero also, ancj J should imagine would do a good business, _ If reports are correct the haulage pf timber for this district will be Kteoijrt

this spring, or as soon as the woailiov initl roads aro favorable. A temporary lintel at Whakataki is being fitted up. There are many unemployed passing through the district at present, and 'must o£ them are hard up; but although in such great straits I am informed that some refused road work at 7s per diem, no doubt ha;ing confidence in future laans. I notice, on Mr Hursthousc's motion last Wednesday, Libraries receiving Government aid arc to liavo the Gazette, Hansard, and Parliamentary papers free, This will be very acceptable to our Library. With the exception of one, lady suffering from a severe cold, which I am'hppy to hear is much better, the- health of this locality is good, notwithstanding its many difficulties.
