ML PHARAZYN IN REPLY

To-lhc Editor of the Wairabtpa Daily. Sir,—l am not in tho habit of taking notice of any comments the Press may be pleased to make on anything I may do in my public capacity, but there are occasions when it becomes necessary to do so, Your leading article of yesterday furnishes one of these, as you therein blame my desire for " economy" for the grave fault committed by the Council in not advertising sufficiently. lam quite awaro that the I first article of your belief is ' advertise'; but though I think it would be parsimony instead of economy to fail to sufficiently advertise, I hold that the Council should only do so for strictly business reasons, because it wishes its requirements to •be known. I cannot agreo with .you in thinking that we should be justified in spending public;money with a direct view of supporting the Press, if desirable oil this ground it would be far better to vote a direct subsidy, and see what the ratepayers would say to that. While, however, I am .quite willing to heal* all tho blame of " economy" in this respect, I am unable in fairness to other Councillors to do so. Had your report been more full it would have shown that WllCll the advertising accounts were pro-

duced, an unanimous opinion was expressed by Councillors that the cost was too great, and the Clerk was instructed to take steps to ensure greater economy in this respect in future. It is, I think, evident enough to those who reflect for a moment that so far as I can claim the credit for the " economy" complained of, I canhavo no other motive than a desire to discharge my duty to tho

ratepayers faithfully, by a contrary course | I know that I might, at their expense, obtain a large amount of newspaper support, instead of the reverse, but as I am content if, in the part I take in public matters, I can do some little good, instead of being made to appear to do it, I shall, notwithstanding adverse criticism, adhere to the rule I have laid down for myself with regard to advertising, viz., never to sanction the expenditure unless I believe, as a matter of business, it will pay the County to attract attention to its wants by so doing.—l am, Ac., C. Puauazyn.
