TINUI.

(FitOM our own Correspondent. ) May 13th, 1879.

Since my last we go on much in the same way. On Thursday evening last, the School Committee—Messrs Maunsell, (chairman), Groves and Fabian—met to consider an application for a new School District at the Upper Taueru. As tho advancement of these institutions arc for the General to provide for, there was 110 reason for opposing it. After various contingencies were disposed of, matters in connection ,with our local library was considered. Much credit is due to tho to the Library Committee and friends who have assisted in this laudable undertaking. We have now some four hundred volumes and although a goodly number of these books have been free gifts, economy and, every care has been displayed with what" little means were available for the establishment of this desired object. We have a nice book-case, which will hold a thousand volumes, and when in receipt of the Government grant, as an equivalent to what i has been collected, we will add to our stock, Would that some of our worthy landowners would show their approval of this 'desirable object, and assist tangibly our worthy Treasurer (Mr Langdon), who will bo only too glad-to receive donations for same. We hope that in a week or so the Library will be open for circulation. The amount of yearly subscription has not been decided upon, but this will be arranged shortly. We expect an addition to Library per Kiwi.

The Kiwi was to have called at Castlepoint on or about the Gtli inst. The sea being too heavy she went on, and I hear, met with some accident which prevented her reaching Napier till three days after, and that a new propeller, had to be sent overland to replace the one broken. I regret to hear that in returning from Napier one of her crew met with an accident, and this caused the Captain to push on for Wellington to obtain medical aid, and did not call at Castlepoint. It is likely she will put in an appearance in a few days. I see the Go-ahead has put back to Castlepoint twice this last week owing in hot being able to land on the 1 coast on account of bad weather.

The necessary material is now being carted for the erection of Mr Miller's tem-

porary hotel building, this I hear, will be built at once on a site a little, above where the late Hotel stood. This will do very well till the new Hotel is. built, which, I beliove, is to be a great improvement on tliejold one. Again I have to report fire with all its horrors; The Marine Hotel, at Whakataki, was burnt to the ground this morning between 2 and 3 o'clock, and I am informed ..that nearly all the furniture, effects, and stock was saved. The firo is reported to have broke out in the storeroom, but by what means'is not dear. There was only Mrs Magnusson, family of four, and two lodgers, in the house, Mr Magnusson being in Wellington, There is a policy on the building, but it has not transpired how much, some say £7OO. I believe the Union is interested, Again, no doubt, there will be an inquiry. One strange coincidence is that the fire happened about the same time in the morning as that which place here just a fortnight ago, and in each case the landlords were from home. We hav'o had delightful weather since Friday last. The feed is coming out nicely and farmers aro pleased with present prospects, excluding price of wool.
