HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF.
Wo are told (says the Manawatu Times) that history repeats itself in different ages, and I presume Biblical history is 110 exception to the general rule. If there be any truth in the statement, then, on last Thursday the Tomple of Justice, Pahnerston, was transformed into the Temple of Solomon, Mr Ward enacted the character of the Jewish ruler, and the " flesh," not the bone, of contention, the much-coveted babo—not grown to woman's estate—had a representative in the person of the notorious Mrs Keys, That lady had transferred her affections from her fast-aging lord to a more yeuthful swain, and while tlio deserted husband sought to claim his rights by "martial law," his . rival relied upon his youth and good looks, ' backed up by a strong purse to be granted habeas corpus, Bofore the aid of the law had been invoked there had been an a I fresco struggle for the prize, in tlio course, of which the lady had stood a good show of dismemberment, and it was in connection therewith that the party interveiwed the magistrate. The defendant Keys urged that lie had been only seeking to recover" his own lawful wife," a state of affairs indignautly repudiated by the party concerned, who assorted that Mr Ward—a defendant of that name, not tlio judgewas the huaband of her choice, and consequently that she was " his lawful wife," winding up with a challengo to Keys to prove his marital authority. The three defendants were fined fifteen shillings each, and when asked who would pay her fiiip the lady replied, " Why, of course, my husband," whereupon her two admirers made a great struggle to. bo permitted to' pay the penalty, tko victory, however, falling to tlio more youthful ,ono, who in consequenco marched out in possession of his prize, leaving tlio worsted widower disconsolately behind.
