THE PAYING OF PARIS.

In ii report recently prepared for the Municipal Council of Paris, it is stated that the cost of repairing the streets of that city is estimated at £304,128 for 1879, or £8,898 more than was expended last year, Up to within the .ast 15 years nearly the whole of the cost was borne by the State, but it was subsequently decided that in no case should the subsidy from Imperial sources exceed £IOO,OOO per annum. This sum has been since reduced to £120,000, the result being that nearly 750,000 square feet of streets and roadways in the outer circle of Paris are neither paved nor macadamized, The material used in Paris is of three kinds—-paving-stones, macadam, and asphalte. The first-named material is used upon about 20,000,000 square feet of streets androadways; and though it costs much more to lay down in the first instance, it lasts longer and is more easily kept in repail' than tlvo macadam. About 900,000 square feet of roadway are paved with asphalte, which in the report prasonted to the municipal council by one of its members is described as combining the advantages of the former materials.
