TENUI.
(From ouh own Correspondent,) Tcnui, Feb. 20,1879. Since my last there is almost a dearth in the way of news. Tho topic principally is tho dry weather, and indeed this assumes a serious aspect, for water is scarce. We were blest with three good showers on Sunday; this will freshen the feed, but we hope for more. Towards evening tho weather is cold, and there is every sign of an early winter, We have already had several frosts, and the late potato crops have suffered thereby. With respect to the finding of the body of the Maori girl in the Maungapakeha Valley, this report, although made in all good faith, and substantiated by several, doc 3 not appear to have been reported to our local Constable. Although the girl is missing, and her horse was found some weeks ago on the hills adjacent to the Valley, the rumour is not verified yet. It appears horse-stealing is becoming rife in this neighborhood. Two horses have been stolen recently. It is to be hoped that tho thieves will be speedily captured and get their deserts. I believe one of our principal squatters, with his family and a few friends, availed themselves recently of a week's pleasure excursion to Cashpoint, The weather being all that could be desired—combined with the good accommodation, which Mr Rogers is noted for—rendered their stay by the seaside very pleasant. men there is quite a commotions to where the Easter Races v will be held, The majority are for having them at Tcnui, if it can be arranged. Having funds already for the purpose, the Whareama men are anxious to meet their Wairarapa fiiends there, although the Castlepoint courso is the best. The friends will liavo no fond remembrances of it. One thing in favor of Castlepoint is that they can obtain good accommodation there now,. The Castlepoint Road Board met last Saturday, and I believe they have at present abandoned the idea of making the inland road from Whakataki to Castlepoint, This road was commenced, but Mr Johnston objected to " French leave" being taken in making a road through his property. Polico Court held here to-day, R. Maunsell, Esq., J,P., on the Bench, This was to dispose of a case for abusive language. Being an old offender, the penalty was £5, or one montlis' imprisonment. I think it is time that the Government decided about r Police ■
