COUNTY CONFERENCE.

of the Public Works and Pmanco Committees of the Wairarapa East and West County Councils was held in tlio Council Chambers, Carterton, on Wednesday afternoon. Present—Councillors Pharazyn, Chairman of Wairarapa West County Council (in tlio Chair), G. Beetham, Chairman of Wairarapa East County Council, H. B. Bunny, Boys, and Bennott, On discussion as to the apportionment of salary of the County Engineer mid expenses of engineering staff between the two Counties, it was ultimately resolved that tlio Engineer bo requested to keep as accurate an account as possible of the proportion of his time occupied on works in either County, and to furnish a statement of tlio samo quarterly to each Council, so that a fair proportion of. his salary may bo made charged to each. Councillor Beetham brought under the notice of tlio meeting, a letter from the chairman of tlio Waiohine River Board, applying for aid from the Wairarapa East County Council, towards the River Works. ■The original notice of motion of Councillor Caselberg, tlio report and supplementary report of the County Engineer the resolution thereon, passed' by the Wairarapa West County Council, and the notification thereof to the River Board were read to tho meeting. On discussion as to the works in the hands of the County Engineer it appeared the Engineer had his hands full of work for the next month, at least with the Mungapakeha Road vote and tho preparation of the bridge ovor the Ruamahunga River (Hurunuiorangi.) In reply to a question of Cv Bennett, it was stated that there had not been any tender for tho bridge under £6200, which was far in excess of what tho Council had at their disposal, and that it had boon arranged with Mr Blacket that, subject to the approval of Mr Macandrow, ho should furnish Mr King with data, and that from them the latter should prepare plans and specifications for a bridge such as ho might think would meet the necessities of the public, and might bo constructed some- • where near tho amount at tlio disposal of tho two Councils, Somo reference was made to the Engineer's report 011 the Black Bridge between Greytowu and Carterton, which it was suggested might be strengthened and supported by diagonal braces built from the piles underneath, so as to be serviceable for many years to come. After considerable discussion the following resolutions were carried

1. Tlmt the Committees of the Wairarapa and Masterton Hospitals be requested to furnish the following estimates a. The amount necessary for the due maintenance of each hospital. b. The cost per head of each patient. c vgrthmhuk• The proportion of patients that might be expected to pay their cost of maintenance. 2. That the joint Financo Committees of the Wairarapa East anil West Counties agree that subsidies shall be granted to Hospital Committees and any committees undertaking charitable aid within the counties, each county contributing towards such subsidies in proportion to the funds at their disposal each obtained as subsidies from the Government. Tho Council then adjourned sine die.
