O?2T. PRESS AGENCY.) ..-.—.—■s»._ ._ THE DIRECT MAIL, SERVICE. Wellington, Tuesday. Tho Chronicle is informed that the Government haye received further correspondence from tho Agent-General enclosing correspondence, from Galbraith and Denny,. tlio well-known shipowners, re the proposed direct steam service, Thvy suggest a two-monthly uovvico tvs sufficient for present requirements. They propose to supply three steamers of superior class, with an average speed of 12,}- knots, The outward voyage via the Capo of Good Hope to occupy forty-two days; homewards via tho Suez Canal forty days. They want an eight years' contract, and ask for a subsidy of eighty-thousand annually. Yogel urges tho Government to accept the service. Taniunga, Tuesday, WRECK OF THE TAUPO. Tho Tauno left Auckland at 5 p.m. yesterday evening, and had a good run down the Coast. Entered Tauranga Heads about a quarter to seven this morning against a strong tide. When passing thoMongomii Hill, within a hundred yards of Stoney Point Reef, the vessel struck the ground heavily and remained hard and fast. The engine at once was stopped, and in a few minutes the fires were extinguished by the influx of water into the engine room, Anticipating serious injury to the vessel's bottom, immediate preparations were made to land the passengers and mails. The boats were quickly lowered, and within twenty minutes every passenger, the mails, and a quantity of luggage were safely placed ashore, wheneo they were taken to Tauranga by tho steamer KataIcati. From subsequent examination the vessel has apparently struck the ground immediately under tho engine room, which with middle compartment are flooded to the floors. The other two compartments are dry. Soundings indicate two fathoms of water all round the vessel at low tide. She is evidently hanging amidships on the shallow patch, composed of round boulders, There are strong hopes of the vessel floating off next tido. In tho meantime several lightei'3 are busily engaged relieving her of cargo, chiefly coal. The officers and crew are most energetic in their efforts to relieve tho vessel from her unfortunate position, and great praise in particular is duo to Mr Garrard, the chief oliicer, for his prompt and unremittin« exertions while superintending the lowering of tho boats and landing the passengers, which was accomplished without confusion. The accident was caused by the vessel suddenly canting shoreward when steaming against a strong tide rip at the most critical point in the channel. General sympathy is felt for Captain Cromarty under the circumstances, which are considered purely accidental and unavoidable. LATER. It is foarod the Taupo is a total wreck.
