LAND BALLOT
THE CENTREWOOD RUN. WAIMATE MAN SUCCESSFUL. A Government run of 5650 acres, part of the Centrewood Estate, ten miles from Waimate, was ballotted for at Timaru yesterday. Originally there were 158 applicants, from various parts of Otago and Canterbury but single men were placed in the second preference list. Fifty-five went to the ballot in the first preference list, the successful applicant being a well-known Waimate farmer, Mr J. S. Matheson, of Maytown. The run has a carrying capacity estimated at 1000 ewes and 2200 dry sheep, and the annual rental is £5OO, the term of license being 34 years. Other properties ballotted were: 752 acres at Ashwick Settlement, the successful applicant being Mr H. A. Munro, of Fairlie; 51 acres at Seaforth Settlement, successful applicant, Mr H. M. Seyb. No offer was received for the property of 56 acres at Geraldine. The examination of applicants was not concluded till 11 o’clock last evening, when the ballots were made.
