A fire broke out in Pitt street this morning, in the premises of Mr Gordon, grocer, by the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. The shop was gutted, and Cox's stock is damaged next door, also shop adjacent The block was insured by the owner in the South British for £1000— Gordon £150 on stock, £75 on furniture — Cox's stock is insured for £500.

George Olsen has been committed for trial for attempted murder of his wife, Elizabeth Olsen.

James Thornley, was drowned at Northern Wairoa while watering his horses in the Mongonui creek.

The race horses, Welcome Jack, Canard, Clarence, Poet, Minerva, Tim Whiffler Virginia Water, Piscatorious, King Craig' and Rabina, went south to-day by the Ringarooma.

January 13. The police have received information of other plants of tbe jewellery robbery on board the steamer Wellington, in the boiler and in the shaft tunnel, but they have not been able yef to examine them.
