LARGE FIRE IN AUCKLAND.
Auckland, April 8
Ireland Bros., Panmure tannery, the largest and most extensive in New Zealand, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. When it was discovered, the flames had a firm hold of the buildings, and nothing could be done to save them or the goods stored on them. Nothing is known regarding tbe origin of the fire. The total loss is estimated at £20,000. Amongst the property destroyed were 6000 sides of leather, 18 bales basils, 600 calves skins, 3600 hides, 300 tons of bark, and 3600 gallons cod oil. The tannery, which did a large business, gave employment to 80 men. The New Zealand office had a policy of £7600 on the tannery, but most of it was reinsured. The following are the approximate losses of the various companies involved — New Zealand, £3500; Union, £700; Standard, £350; National, £350; Transatlantic, £800; Victoria, £320 ; North British, £700,

The destruction of Ireland's tannery is believed to be due to incendiarism. Detectives are investigating the matter.
