THE HOKITIKA STATE SCHOOL.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — I believe there are more than five hundred children attending the State School. It is fair to suppose these children have parents, and, therefore, fair to suppose al&o that these, not altogether suppository parents, take an interest in the progress of these five hundred children. Hence, as half yearly examinations are held, it was naturally thought that some idea would be given cs to how the young idea was shooting. I know that the Hokitika school would reflect no disgrace on its education staff, if its pupils fell behind in the annual muster, because many were pick and could not come, and those who could come found Closed doors, and many little footsteps that have been heard in that school will never again raise another echo. So it is certain that whatever the result of the examination may have been, no discredit can be attached to the teachers. Then the question naturally arises, Why does not the Inspector report ? He cannot plead insufficiency of time. A month has elapsed since the examination was held. If he withholds the disclosure from motives of commiseration and softest tenderness of heart, I can assure him for myself and many others he misjudges the strength of our mental fortitudes. We let the " spectre " slide easily at the midwinter examination, but the ghost will find that he will not 'be let off this time without making a report. I am &c, Pater.
