HIGHLY IMPORTANT.
{To the Editor.)
Sic,— A very important notice of motion has been forwarded to the Secretary of the Hokitika Hospital, which it is hoped will not only benefit the mining community, laborers, and others, but also largely augment the amount of annual subscriptions towards the maintenance of the above institution.
The object of the motion is, " that every subscriber of on«pouud and upward?, annually to the funds of the Hokitika Hospital, shall be entitled to a ticket of admission to the institution in case of accident or other sickness." This mo'ion, if carried, will be hailed as a great boon by the mining community, inasmuch that in cases of sickness, the subscriber will not have to hunt up coinmitteeinen, either central or district, but can at once apply for admission to the institution, his subscription receipt being the only pass-port necessary. The necessity for such a change— which will be highly beneficial— is found in the fact of the action of the Committee of the Kumara district, by refusing to acknowledge, or pay for, a large number of patients belonging to tbat district, but which the Central Committee have compelled to admit, thus burdening this community with expenses which more properly should have been borne by the district from whence they came. Allow me to add, this system is in common use in Victoria and other places. I am, &c, John Cross. Hokitika, January 7th.
